Griffin & Howe Gundog Training Series – #4: Puppy Training

Griffin & Howe Lead Trainer and Kennel Manager Ben Baker is an expert on training puppies! Young puppies add so much excitement and joy to each of our lives, but it’s also a vital time for them to learn behaviors that will shape their personality as they grow. Between 3-4 months of age, we focus heavily on forming a young dog’s behaviors and shaping their drive.

Between 3-4 months of age, we focus heavily on forming a young dog’s behaviors and shaping their drive.

Many new gundog owners’ first step to teaching retrieves take place in a large backyard with a lot of distractions and room to roam. Sadly with some young puppies, too much space can set them up for failure. Our overall goal is to always set a dog up for success to condition in skills. We love to start these retrieves in a confined area such as a hallway or small room. After the space is cleared of distractions, it’s time to begin.

At this point, we gather the young dog and gain their attention. We then throw the desired retrieve down and allow the puppy with all their excitement to go get the object. We recommend coming to our store to get some puppy bumpers, or roll up socks into a ball. We want the object easy for a little dog to pickup.

Happy training & we hope this helps!
