Import Services

Griffin & Howe is a licensed importer of firearms. Please note we only engage in the import of sporting rifles and shotguns, we do not handle the import of handguns or automatic firearms.

Importing Guns to USA

To initiate the import process, we will gather specific information on the firearms from yourself or the foreign seller. As firearm importers, we will then submit the US import permit application to our Federal Government for review. Upon approval, we will work directly with the foreign exporter providing them with all import documentation they may need in order to obtain an export permit.

After receiving the approved import permit and export permit, the foreign exporter can organize shipment to the US. Our Customs Broker will clear the shipment with US Customs and post any fees associated with the import including US Customs Duty. The firearms will then be transferred to our facilities where we will engrave the barrels with our name, city and state. This engraving is a federal requirement that must be placed conspicuously on each firearm imported.

Upon completion of our import markings, we will provide you with the final invoice for our import service. When we receive payment in full, we will arrange for your firearms to be shipped to your local firearms dealer so that you can take final possession. If you possess a current New Jersey Firearms ID card you can take possession directly from Griffin & Howe.

Export Services

Please note we only engage in the export of sporting rifles and shotguns, we do not handle the export of handguns or automatic firearms.

Permanently Exporting Firearms From USA

Griffin & Howe can assist with exporting your sporting shotguns or rifles. The most common export transactions are those of an international sale. We can assist whether we work directly with the foreign purchaser or the US seller. Our export services can also be utilized by an individual who is moving abroad and would like to take their firearms with them.

In order to initiate the export process, an import permit must be provided to us from the country we will be exporting to. If the country does not require an import permit, we will need a letter from that country’s government authorizing that an import permit is not required. In addition, you will be responsible for knowing the local laws and regulations in regard to acquiring and possessing firearms in the destination country.

Once we have been provided with the import permit, we will request the delivery of the firearms to our facility. After reviewing and confirming all details on the firearms we will apply for the necessary export permit and work with the foreign importer to arrange delivery.

Information Needed

In addition to the firearm’s details, we will need the following information to submit the export permit application form for approval:

  • U.S. Seller’s name, address, telephone number and email
  • U.S. Source’s (the person/entity shipping to Griffin & Howe) name, address, telephone number and email
  • U.S. Carrier’s business name (the courier company that will be used to ship to Griffin & Howe, UPS, FedEx, etc.)
  • Foreign Clearing Agent’s business name, address, telephone number and email
  • Foreign Importer’s business name, address, telephone number and email
  • Foreign End User’s name, address, telephone number and email

Full payment of all export fees is required prior to any firearm being exported. License fees are non-refundable to customers in the event of a denied application or unused permit.

Permanent Export Fees

These fees do not include any costs associated with importing the firearm into the destination country such as import clearance costs, duty and taxes.

License & Processing for up to 4 firearms (For additional quantities of firearms, please request a quote) - $500.00
Freight Forwarding – approximately $500.00
Shipping Insurance (Optional) - $4.71/$1,000 value with a $1,000 deductible

Due to import and export regulations of some countries we may be unable to assist you with your shipment.

Temporary Export - Repairs

If you need to send your firearm back to a foreign manufacturer or a specific gunsmith abroad for repairs, we have the means to obtain the necessary licenses to accomplish this.

As with all exports, an import permit from the destination country will need to be provided to us first. We will work directly with the foreign temporary end user to ensure your firearm arrives safely and then returns to the US once repairs are complete

Temporary Export Fees

These fees do not include any costs associated with importing the firearm into the destination country as well as exporting the firearm back to the US.

License & Processing for up to 4 firearms* - $500.00
Freight Forwarding (export fees & re-entry fees) - approximately $800.00
Shipping Insurance (Optional) - $4.71/$1,000 value with a $1,000 deductible

Temporary Export – Sport Hunting & Sport Shooting

If you do not wish to hand carry your sporting rifles or sporting shotguns for a hunting or shooting trip abroad, we can assist with a temporary export. You will need to provide us with an import permit from the country we are shipping to in order to initiate the process. We will then obtain the necessary export licenses and documentation to send your firearms abroad.

In most cases we can work with the foreign importer to have them delivered at the estate or outfitter where your shoot or hunt will be held. Please note that there are countries where we cannot assist with temporary exports for hunting or shooting due to their government regulations.

Whether we ship your temporary export, or you hand carry yourself, remember to always obtain a US Customs Form 4457 (Certificate of Registration for Personal Effects) for each rifle or shotgun before leaving the US. This certificate allows you, upon return to the US, to clear them with US Customs without an import permit as well as not paying US Customs duty
