Gain practical knowledge of traditional engraving! Griffin & Howe has partnered with GRS to bring engraving training to the East Coast, held at our on site Event Center.
This five day course, led by Griffin & Howe’s in-house engraver Chris Rossiter, provides an introduction to the core skills used in metal engraving with GRS equipment. Students will work with a range of practice plates in different metals and designs to develop control, consistency, and tool handling techniques. This class also includes instruction and hands-on practice in basic wire inlay, transferring designs onto metal, shading, and background techniques.
Participants will learn how to set up and use the tools, prepare gravers, execute foundational cuts, and apply techniques consistently and effectively. This course is intended for first-time engravers or those preparing for more advanced training.
Objectives:
- Correct setup of GRS equipment
- Operation of common classroom tools
- Tool sharpening, theory, and geometry
- Surface preparation for engraving
- Artwork layout and design principles
- Design transfer techniques
- Proper use of workholding fixtures and devices
- Business practices and pricing work
- Engraving scrolls, borders, letters, and numbers
- Shading techniques and background treatment
- Basics of metal inlay
About Chris Rossiter
Chris Rossiter has been engraving for over a decade, beginning his formal training in 2014 with a foundational course at GRS under Jake Newell. Committed to continual growth, he pursued advanced instruction nearly every year, studying under renowned Master Engravers including Otto Carter, Lee Griffiths, Brian Powley, and Jim Blair. Their mentorship played a key role in helping Chris earn his FEGA Master Engraver certificate and achieve the personal and professional goals he set early in his career. For the past four years, Chris has brought his skills to Griffin & Howe, where his work reflects a deep respect for tradition combined with technical precision and artistic depth.
