Title: Basic Metal Engraving Class with Lee Griffiths

Monday March 16th – Friday March 20th

Gain practical knowledge of traditional engraving! Griffin & Howe has partnered with GRS to bring engraving training to the East Coast, held at our on site Event Center.

This five day course, led by Lee Griffiths, provides an introduction to the core skills used in metal engraving with GRS equipment. Students will work with a range of practice plates in different metals and designs to develop control, consistency, and tool handling techniques. This class also includes instruction and hands-on practice in basic wire inlay, transferring designs onto metal, shading, and background techniques.

Participants will learn how to set up and use the tools, prepare gravers, execute foundational cuts, and apply techniques consistently and effectively. This course is intended for first-time engravers or those preparing for more advanced training.

  • Correct setup of GRS equipment
  • Operation of common classroom tools
  • Tool sharpening, theory, and geometry
  • Surface preparation for engraving
  • Artwork layout and design principles
  • Design transfer techniques
  • Proper use of workholding fixtures and devices
  • Business practices and pricing work
  • Engraving scrolls, borders, letters, and numbers
  • Shading techniques and background treatment
  • Basics of metal inlay


About Lee Griffiths
From farmer to master engraver; Lee Griffiths shows that anyone, if they put in the work, can become a master of their craft. With no formal engraving education, Lee has learned most of what he knows through the help of mentors and his own determination. As a member of the Firearms Engravers Guild of America, he has won over 50 national and international awards. A recognized FEGA master and Colt Master engraver, he is now currently overseeing the Engraving Arts department at Emporia State University. Lee has come a long way from his early days engraving, using metal scrap from the family farm to being an integral part of the GRS Training Center, teaching courses, and helping run the Focus Program.
