The 1884 Springfield Trapdoor rifle was a design improvement of the earlier 1873 rifles and 1866 rifles. The most notable improvements were in the sights, which were modified to improve long range accuracy. This example is in good overall condition, with most of its finish faded to a consistent brown patina with light surface texture. The stock also is in good condition, with no major faults, and wear appropriate for its age. it is of note that the bore is exceptionally clean over most of its length with only the first two inches from the muzzle having been corroded from storage.
