Rifle Scope Mounts

The birth of Griffin & Howe in 1923 was based around the conversion of military rifles to sporting rifles suitable for target and game. As early as 1927, Griffin & Howe complimented this process by developing an innovative detachable sidelever telescopic sight mount, where at the flip of a lever the scope could be removed and replaced without altering the rifle’s zero.

These early roots gave rise to our selection of Griffin & Howe sporting rifle mounts, as well as the well-known M1 Garand ‘M1C’ conversion mount for snipers during World War II. For almost 100 years we have offered a number of custom rifle scope mounts for your sporting or military rifle.

Griffin & Howe Top Mount

The Griffin & Howe Sporting Top Mount is affixed to your rifle by hand using traditional craftsmanship techniques, and blended to create a beautiful and functional scope mounting system.

Sporting Top Mounts consist of a two-piece base system permanently affixed to your firearm and fitted with lever-activated top halves. The top halves consist of the ring, either 1” or 30mm, and the ring base. Different sets of scope rings with bases can be fitted to each top mount, allowing for multiple scopes to be sighted in for different bullet weights for the same rifle. Top mounts allow scopes to be removed from the firearm and reinstalled while maintaining the scope zero.

Griffin & Howe Side Mount

Griffin & Howe sporting side mounts have become the standard for allowing the use of both an open sighting system as well as a telescopic optic on the same rifle. Our quick detachable top half can be removed from the base, allowing an open or peep sight such as a Lyman 48 to be used when the scope is removed. This versatility provides a backup sighting option in the case of a damaged scope, low light condition, or in thick cover when an open sight may be preferred.

Our side mounts are particularly useful as a scope will hold zero when reinstalled on the rifle. For this reason, multiple top halves can be fitted to the same base, allowing different scopes to be sighted in for different bullet weights in the same caliber. Or, as is sometimes the case on firearms with multiple barrel options, multiple scopes and top halves can be fitted to the firearm and used based on which barrel or barrel set is installed. A Griffin & Howe sporting side mount allows for easy installation and versatility when out hunting.

Each side mount is fitted to your rifle’s receiver. Typically, modifications must be made to the stock to allow clearance of the side mount base, which will be pinned and screwed to the receiver for a solid purchase. Bases are specific to your model rifle and are available for many common sporting rifles, as well as many older makes

Griffin & Howe Garand Mount

During the Second World War, Griffin & Howe was commissioned with the construction of a scope mounting solution for the M1 Garand service rifle. As these were top-loading firearms, typical scope mounts could not be used as they would interfere with the function of the rifle.

These conversions would come to be known as the M1C Sniper Conversion for the Garand Rifle. M1C or Garand mounts would borrow much of the technology from the sporting side mounts that Griffin & Howe was already producing and installing on sporting rifles.

M1C Garand mounts consist of three major parts; the base, top slide, and rings (the top slide and rings combined being referred to as the ‘top half’). Each top half was custom fitted to its corresponding base, and consequently its rifle. It is for this reason that all top halves will not necessarily fit all bases and one of the reasons why bases and top halves were serialized to match their parent rifles. The serial number was stamped on the top of the dovetail on the base, as well as on the side of the top slide.

Griffin and Howe is pleased to announce new production of our M1C scope mount for the Garand rifle. Machined in-house on modern CNC equipment, these all-steel mounts are made to the original dimensions, but held to much tighter tolerances.

These new M1C mounts are exacting re-releases, made to be as at home on collectors rifles as they are on those used in competitions and recreaction.

M1C Garand mounts consist of three major parts; the base, top slide, and rings (the top slide and rings combined being referred to as the ‘top half’). Originally each top half was custom fitted to its corresponding base, and consequently its rifle. It is for this reason that all top halves will not necessarily fit all bases - if needed, Griffin & Howe can fit our re-released M1C top halves to existing bases. This work can also be performed by qualified gunsmiths.

Griffin & Howe is also happy to complete full M1C installations on existing Garand rifles lacking the M1C bottom half.
