In the early 1900’s J.P. Sauer & Sohn began production of a lightweight single shot rifle very similar to contemporary English “Rook Rifles’, this became known as their Model “Tell” after William Tell the Swiss folk hero. This example is of a somewhat later revision of the original design which features a sliding tang safety instead of the original winged safety catch. This example is also chambered for the more powerful 9.3x57R/360 cartridge a then popular deer hunting cartridge roughly equivalent to the English .360 2 ¼ or American .38-55 black powder cartridges. Overall condition is fair to good, with only finish wear externally and no major faults in the stock. Internally the bore is good over most of its length, with a few pits in the rifling near the chamber mouth. The lockwork appears good, with the set trigger functioning as intended, but the front trigger will not fire without first being set by the rear, this is possibly from coagulated grease or from being improperly tuned.
