The Starr Carbine was one of many breech loading percussion carbines designed for use during the civil war. It was generally well liked amongst those who it was issued to, with over 20000 made. This example is in fair to good overall condition, with ware appropriate for its age and usage during the war. The breech and lockwork is functional, with only mild corrosion both internally and externally, while the barrel has seen the consequence of black powder usage with deep pitting internally. The stocks have no severe cracking but show wear consistent with use, as well as a handful of notches cut near the wrist.
