Description

Monday July 12th – Friday July 16th

Taught by master engraver Chris Rossiter, The Second Cut is a five-day course designed for students who have completed a beginner engraving course and are ready to take the next step. Building on the fundamentals they already know, students will develop their skills and gain experience approaching engraving with greater independence and control.
Working with GRS tools and equipment, students will practice more controlled cutting techniques and explore basic to intermediate scroll designs, advanced borders, and clean, consistent cuts.
A central focus of the course is learning to design scrollwork with intention. Students will practice planning and developing scroll designs by applying principles of scroll structure, backbone flow, leaf development, balance, and spacing. They will also explore how to adapt a design to a specific engraving area and use advanced borders to frame and enhance their work.
Students will develop greater familiarity with sharpening and maintaining their gravers. By examining how graver shapes, faces, heels, and sharpening methods affect cutting performance and tool handling, they will gain a better understanding of how to prepare tools for different engraving tasks.
Through hands-on practice, students will work on making more accurate and consistent cuts and developing greater control over shading. They will also be introduced to common design and execution challenges and practice ways to identify and address them.
By the end of The Second Cut, students will have expanded their understanding of scroll design, borders, graver preparation, and controlled cutting techniques.
