The style of Griffin & Howe rifles has changed very little over the years, as we have been providing the same quality of custom hunting guns for over a century now. This beautiful rifle shows a rather peculiar bit of custom gunsmithing, as the barrel, which is outwardly mundane, is in fact a Winchester Supergrade Safari barrel, that has been fitted to a FN 1950 Mauser action. This was done by sleeving the smaller Winchester barrel shank with an adaptor, that was then silver soldered to the barrel shank and threaded to match the Mauser action. Such a modification became somewhat commonplace for us in the 1940s and 50s, as the quality of Winchester produced barrels often was greater than the competition, and for the larger magnum chamberings, they often included barrel mounted recoil lugs, such as this one. The remainder of this rifle is somewhat mundane in comparison to our other works, with the engraved and gold inlaid floorplate being another standout feature. The manufacture date of this rifle is likely in the mid to late 1970’s based on markings inside the stock, as it is bereft of a barrel number beside our Griffin & Howe Inc, New York marking.
