The trapdoor-action rifle is one of the most recognizable firearm designs of the late 19th century, utilizing a hinged breechblock that opens upward for loading. While the manufacturer and caliber of this example are unknown, trapdoor rifles remain popular collector pieces due to their connection to early military and sporting firearm development.
This trapdoor rifle is in fair to poor overall condition. The receiver and other metal components exhibit heavy pitting and surface rust throughout. The barrel also shows significant surface rust and pitting, with condition consistent with long-term age and use. The wood stock has several large cracks around the receiver area, which are the most notable condition issues on the rifle. Due to its overall condition, this firearm is best suited as a restoration project, parts donor, or display piece for a collector interested in antique firearms.
