The Colt “Dragoon” revolvers were a marked design improvement over the earlier “Walker” revolvers. Made with the intent of reducing the risk of damage due to overcharging while retaining the powerful .454 Cal Ball and heavy powder charge, other improvements were also included to better retain the loading lever under recoil as well as somewhat reduce weight. The Dragoon was a widely popular revolver, seeing multiple military contracts as well as widespread civilian sale.
This example is one of the transitional examples between the 2nd and 3rd models, where almost all of the upgraded components of the 3rd are used but still retains the squared trigger guard. Overall external condition of this revolver is good with moderate wear from its usage throughout the U.S. Civil War, and quite luckily retains functional lockwork.
The bottom of the grip has been inscribed by the original owner, although it is difficult to read, the inscription has been deciphered to read “J. T. Averett. AQM 38 V”. official Parole records with the National Park Service have Him listed as a Captain for “Pickett’s Division” But others show him as a 2nd lieutenant of the 38th Virginia Infantry Regiment, either way he is recorded as being present for the surrender of Lee at Appomattox.
