The Colt “Dragoon” revolvers were a marked design improvement over the earlier “Walker” revolvers. Made with the intent of reducing the risk of damage due to overcharging while retaining the powerful .454 Cal Ball and heavy powder charge, other improvements were also included to better retain the loading lever under recoil as well as somewhat reduce weight. The Dragoon was a widely popular revolver, seeing multiple military contracts as well as widespread civilian sale.
Overall external condition of this revolver is good with moderate wear from its usage throughout the U.S. Civil War, however age has taken its toll on the internals, as the lockwork is no longer functional.
This pistol has had its original ownership attributed to Sgt. Jacob Gochenour, of Captain B.Z Price’s Company, Light Artillery, McIntosh’s Battalion, Va. Research of this was done by the most recent owner and has not been corroborated as of yet, however records of Sgt. Gochenour’s enlistment and a printed copy of his journal are supplied with the pistol.
