The Remington Model 11 was the first American made semi automatic shotgun, though it was in fact a licensed copy of the Browning designed Auto 5 made by FN. The only significant differences between the A5 and Model 11 was the absence of the magazine cutoff. The Remington model known as “The Sportsman” was a modified version of the original model 11 design, with a shorter internal magazine tube, limiting it to 3 rounds to comply with waterfowl laws. This example of a Remington sportsman is in excellent condition for its age, but has had its barrel shortened to affix a Cutts compensator with replaceable choke cones. The choke currently equipped is marked FC .705, however when measured, it comes out to about .760 internal diameter, which closely matches a “spreader” choke. This leads to the conclusion that the choke was likely cut down to achieve a different pattern.
