The M1903 Springfield was America’s standard service rifle from 1903 until 1936 when it was officially replaced by the M1 Garand. Although it saw official replacement in 1936 the 1903 saw continued service as a secondary standard and in reserve units, though possibly its most notable deployment was as a marksman’s rifle. This rifle is the 1903-A3 variant, which used many simplified parts to ease wartime production and was largely used as a secondary standard rifle as well as for training. This example is in good overall condition with wear appropriate for its age, but has had a Tasco scope added and a new bolt handle neatly welded in place.
