The Sharps – Hankins naval carbine was put into production at the start of the civil war shortly after Christian Sharps had briefly left the sharps rifle company. It was well made and well liked by its users, however the addition of the leather wrapped barrel would cause corrosion problems over the years. This example is in exceptional condition for its age and still retains most of the waterproof coating in the leather wrap, however it is quite brittle, limiting the distance the lever can be opened without cracking the leather. The metal condition is quite good, indicating proper storage. The stock condition appears good, however there is a well repaired crack around the wrist.
