Though often overshadowed by its successors, the Henry & Winchester rifles, the Volcanic pistols & Carbines were a pivotal step in repeating firearm development, and furthermore, the first firearm officially produced by Smith & Wesson. The Volcanic Repeating pistol used an innovative ammunition, consisting of a “Rocket Ball” or hollow skirt projectile containing the powder and primer without the need of a casing, in effect the first caseless self contained ammunition. These Rocket Ball cartridges were fed from an underbarrel tube magazine and cycled through the action through the use of a lever, a design which carried over to the Henry & Winchester Rifles.
This example of a Volcanic Repeating Arms “Navy Pistol” is in excellent overall condition for its age, with very little overall wear. the only real wear consists of light bluing loss on the barrel and the odd ding to the bronze action. The action itself is in working order and cycles easily once the hammer has been cocked.
