The marlin 1898 was a superbly built pump action shotgun and the main competitor for the Winchester 1897, unfortunately the lack of gunsmiths trained in its operation led to many of them braking down over time. This example is a C grade, the second highest grade available and features figured walnut stocks and engraving on the receiver. Metal condition is good, with mild finish loss and some corrosion forming near and around the trigger. The stocks however, are in pretty bad shape, with the buttstock cracked behind the tang and some white residue wrapped around the tang, the slide grip or forend looks to have had a substantial portion rebuilt with Bondo or some other sort of filler. Mechanically, this shotgun appears sound but in need of maintenance, the barrel is loose in the action, needing tightening of the adjustment ring, and the bolt is hard to release, likely caused by light springs or burr’s in the “hang fire safety”.
